Tree Campus Higher Education

³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥ has been recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education since 2017. This designation from the Arbor Day Foundation is awarded to universities and colleges across the United States for promoting healthy trees and student engagement on campus. To obtain this distinction, the college met the five core standards for an effective campus forest management, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

2020 Service Learning Project

On December 2, ³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥ held a tree planting ceremony to remember and honor the life of former employee David Allen Bertoch. David Bertoch began working at ³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥ College under Dr. Losser as an admissions specialist in 1997. Bertoch worked at the college until his passing in 2001. He was well known for having an outgoing and positive personality. He had a great rapport with his colleagues and had a heart full of service for the students and staff at ³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥ College. Bertoch also helped with the local Exchange Club and after work he would teach non-traditional students twice a week at Southeastern Technical College.

³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥ held the tree planting event virtually through a video presentation. The video is part of the learning project for the application for the Tree Campus Higher Education certification from the Arbor Day Foundation. The video includes detailed instructions on how to plant a tree, including timing of the planting, how deep to dig a hole for the tree, taking care of the root, watering and mulching of the tree. The target audience for this video is both EGSC students and the community around the college.

Bertoch’s sister-in-law Jennifer Fields, the Assistant Director of Admissions and Processing at EGSC, donated the Swamp Chestnut Oak that was planted during the ceremony.
